Hotel Editorial Review

By the Hotel

Double Dutch Resort offers you a comfortable stay in a rural Indian setting.
Double Dutch Resort is located in the Kamaraj Valley in the spurs of the Palani Hills. An altitude of 300m above sea level provides you a relatively cool pleasant tropical climate for most of the year.

We started as a family home in 1994. Since so many friends and family like to stay with us, we gradually changed into a resort for guests who are interested in a home stay in the countryside. People who love this place are, for example, bird lovers - people who like to go for walks or trekkings - people who like to experience what it is to be a part of the Indian rural community - people who like India but like a break in a quiet place - people who use it as a base for daytrips. Single travelers too are welcome to enjoy the homey atmosphere.

The resort has two bungalows. The 5 spacious rooms have an attached bathroom and a wide veranda, facing the garden and the lake. Dinner is usually served on the rooftop. We offer Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals and continental food. The menus are set, but we try to find out in advance what the guests prefer. Because we are very small we can give our guests our full attention. We, a Dutch couple and our Indian staff, will look after you in a unique Dutch - Indian blend.

The resort - some 5 acres - is situated in a beautiful valley, with two sides surrounded by mountains. The garden is next to a lake, so swimming is one of the possibilities (monsoon dependent). The noise and the dust of the traffic and cities are absent. Instead there are the sounds of nature. For guests who like to have a peaceful rest, we have a veranda, covered with bougainvillea, from which you can enjoy the many birds and butterflies who come very near to, and even in the house. There have been peacocks in the rose garden, a bramini kite in the living room and a big owl on the veranda.
There is a small library with a variety of English and Dutch books.
We offer an inhouse beauty-parlour/masseuse (ladies only) and masseur (gents only).
You can make walks or trekkings: around the lake, to the nearby cave temple or the waterfall, along the rice fields, the peanut gardens and the palm groves.

The nearest village is Athoor at a distance of 6 km. Athoor is a small village, with a simple but busy marketplace. There is a post office and a bank where you can change foreign currency. During a walk to Athoor you will see villagers on their way to work, often herding goats, sheep, calves, cows and/or water buffaloes. Women carry water or firewood. Or you can join us on the motorbike when we go shopping or we can order a taxi for you.

The nearest town is Dindigul at a distance of 21 km, 45 minutes by taxi. It is a bustling town, with many shops. In most cases you will be the only tourist around. If you are lucky you will meet the temple elephant going around for bakshish in the shopping area. You can climb to the rock fort from which you have a view over the town and its surroundings.

A visit to Madurai is worthwhile, to go sightseeing, to pay a visit to the famous Meenakshi Temple, and to go shopping. It is 62 km to Madurai which you cover by taxi in 1½ hours. There is also a bus connection which will take 2 hours. Our guests prefer to stay with us rather than in Madurai, which as many Indian towns is full of noise and dust and hassle.

The hillstation Kodaikanal and the nature reserve Periyar are also fairly near; most of our guests visit these places on an overnight trip.

Motorbike trips: We can take you on the bike/scooter to see special places and experience the Indian countryside in a different way. For one or more days, specifics to be discussed.

We'd be glad to advice you about other trips and excursions in the region.
